Following an eventful offseason, the New York Jets had one of the most crowded quarterback groups in the entire league. As a result, it appears quarterback Christian Hackenberg was the odd man out.

Ever since the Jets acquired quarterback Sam Darnold with the third overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, the Jets have made it known that they had planned on clearing out some room under center. They were able to do just that after trading Hackenberg to the Oakland Raiders in exchange for a conditional seventh-round pick in 2019, via the Jets official Twitter:

Bowles: QB Christian Hackenberg has been traded to Oakland for a 2019 conditional 7th-round pick.

The move should hardly come as any surprise. New York made it clear that they were looking to fortify the position this offseason. They got off to a solid start by bringing back veteran quarterback Josh McCown and the addition of quarterback Teddy Bridgewater.

McCown had established himself as the clear-cut starter last season. Meanwhile, the signing of Bridgewater was likely an attempt to gauge how well the young gunslinger has progressed since his devastating knee injury back in 2016. However, the Jets officially solidified the group when they traded up to take Darnold in the draft.

That said, New York had a solid stable of talent under center with McCown, Bridgewater, and now Darnold in the mix.

It seems head coach Jon Gruden is intrigued by the prospect of having Hackenberg in the fold behind starting quarterback Derek Carr. At the price of a conditional seventh-rounder, there is little risk involved in bringing in another player for Carr to compete with. Hackenberg will likely be vying for the backup spot against the likes of quarterbacks EJ Manuel and Connor Cook.
