The Oakland Raiders were down 21 with 3:30 left in their eventual loss to the Tennessee Titans. Realistically, they weren't going to win. Mathematically, they could have.

However, those slim chances of leaving as victors got slimmer when on fourth-and-goal on the Titans one-yard line, quarterback Derek Carr threw the ball away after seeing nothing open.

The Black Hole wasn't happy. The week-to-week ambassador of the Black Hole, however, Jon Gruden defends his actions.

“He exhausted that play for what it was,” Gruden said, via Paul Gutierrez of ESPN. “I’m not going to be one to stand here and say that a turning point in the game, but I think he played really well today, Carr did, given what’s going on around him. I think there’s a big story there. At least, we recognize it, and we’re really proud of the way he’s competing and performing with all the moving pieces.”

Meanwhile, there was nothing open for Carr. He explains, via Scott Bair of NBC Sports Bay Area:

“They put us into a scramble drill. I tried to extend the play in the pocket, like we’ve been working on. I tried to find somebody in the pocket and then as soon as they got close I tried to extend it outside the pocket. I promise you I wrung out the whole [towel] on that one… There were seven defensive backs looking at me, waiting for the ball. It is what it is.”

The Raiders lost 42-21, losing their playoff hopes in the process.
