The Washington Redskins fired Jay Gruden on Monday following an 0-5 start to the season.

His brother, Oakland Raiders coach Jon Gruden, reacted to the firing on Tuesday, essentially saying that it's something most people go through in the NFL:

“It was a long night, last couple of nights,” said Jon, according to Paul Gutierrez of ESPN NFL Nation. “He worked hard. Got a lot of respect for my brother. Obviously disappointed for him getting fired. My dad’s been fired. I’ve been fired. Jay’s been fired and welcome to the club, bro.”

Jay was hired as head coach of the Redskins all the way back in 2014. During his time at the helm, he went 35-49-1 and made just one playoff appearance, which came back in 2015 when Washington went 9-7 and won the NFC East division title.

The Redskins posted back-to-back seven-win seasons in 2017 and 2018 and are one of just two 0-5 teams in the league right now.

While Gruden's lack of success was obviously a big reason for his dismissal, it was not the only factor.

It became increasingly obvious that Gruden and the Redskins' front office had a different vision for the direction of the franchise as Washington selected quarterback Dwayne Haskins with the 15th overall pick of the draft back in April even though Gruden disagreed.

Rumors stated that Haskins was aware that Gruden did not want him, which almost certainly created an uncomfortable situation in the Redskins' locker room.

Washington has made the playoffs just five times since 1993.

The Redskins will take on the Miami Dolphins in a battle of winless teams next Sunday.
