With news recently emerging that the Las Vegas Raiders have decided to part ways with defensive coordinator Paul Guenther, it has now been revealed that head coach Jon Gruden has picked Rod Marinelli to fill in the recently vacated role.

This report comes via Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network:

Guenther, who joined the Raiders as the team's DC back in 2018, has taken the fall for Las Vergas' poor showing on the defensive end over the past few weeks. On Sunday, the Raiders fell to the Indianapolis Colts, 44-27, and unfortunately for him, the heavy defeat served as the final straw for Guenther.

Marinelli currently serves as defensive line coach will be promoted as the squad's new defensive coordinator for the remainder of the campaign. The 71-year-old vet has been around the block quite a bit, so his new found role with the Raiders is not exactly going to be unchartered waters for him. It remains to be seen if Marinelli will retain his new post beyond this season, but this could serve as an opportunity for him to prove his worth for Las Vegas, so to speak.

Sunday's defeat against the Colts represents the Raiders' third loss in their past four games, which includes that rather contentious win over the New York Jets in Week 13. They will be back in action on Thursday against the Los Angeles Chargers, and hopefully for Las Vegas, they will be able to showcase a renewed defensive outlook for that one. Then again, we're not banking on any miracles at this point.
