After a disappointing 6-10 season, the Oakland Raiders have decided to make some major changes to the coaching staff. The team has brought in Jon Gruden as Jack Del Rio's successor and the one-time Super Bowl champion has some plans for quarterback Derek Carr.

The two-time Pro Bowler is coming off a down season in which he went from an MVP candidate in 2016 to a quarterback that failed to live up to expectations in 2017. Gruden wants to get Carr back on track and bring out the Fresno State product's true potential, via Matt Kawahara of the San Francisco Chronicle.

“The system that we’re going to put in place is going to demand a lot from him,” Gruden said of Carr, “and I think that’s what’s going to unlock the greatness in him.”

During his last stint with the Raiders, Gruden had success bringing out the best in Rich Gannon. The veteran quarterback bounced around the NFL for quite a bit before landing in Oakland in 1999 and earning Pro Bowl honors in four of the six seasons he played with the Raiders. Gannon also won his only NFL MVP award in 2002 which was the season after Gruden was traded to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Carr, however, is much younger and has the potential to be one of the best quarterbacks in the league for the majority of his career. The 26-year-old may be coming off a disappointing season in comparison to the last couple of years, but he can bounce back with a vengeance if he buys into Gruden's system. It could be a big year for the former second-round pick.
