With no new contract in sight and the regular season approaching, Oakland Raiders defensive end Khalil Mack's holdout is now likely going to cost him games that matter, according to Yahoo Sports' Charles Robinson.

Robinson reports there has been no progress made on discussions and both sides are as entrenched as ever:

As of Monday evening, sources said both sides remained entrenched in the same positions that have contributed to a stalemate in negotiations since February: with the Raiders declining to offer Mack a contract extension and with Mack seeking a long-term deal that would make him the NFL’s highest paid defensive player. One source said there have been no meaningful talks between the two sides in months and that the situation has devolved to a deadlocked “pay him or trade him” conversation.

Robinson also noted that while Jon Gruden isn't directly involved with the talks, the new head coach has the final say in whatever happens with Mack unless Raiders owner Mark Davis steps in. Funding the deal reportedly isn't an issue for Davis, so Gruden is effectively in charge of making the final call of what to pay Mack, though general manager Reggie McKenzie is also playing a role in the negotiations.

Oakland's front office obviously values Mack, but apparently not to the point where they think they need to cave and give him the deal he wants. The Raiders are reportedly listening to trade offers, but they need to be blown away to actually pull the trigger on a trade. They feel they have the necessary leverage in this situation to wait it out and ultimately get a new contract done.

However, Mack doesn't appear to be on the verge of blinking, so the two sides continue to stare at each other as the regular season creeps closer and closer. Aaron Donald's pending contract reportedly means nothing at this point in these negotiations, and it's as unclear as ever when this situation will get sorted out.
