During these trying times, there continues to be an influx of athletes that donate their time and money to help the people in need. After joining the Las Vegas Raiders this offseason, Marcus Mariota is providing meals for Honolulu students during the coronavirus situation.
Due to the coronavirus pandemic, schools around the world have been shut down to prevent further damage. As a result, some children no longer have school breakfast or lunches to rely on for their meals.
Nevertheless, Mariota has partnered with his foundation to provide meals to some of those children in need. Mariota, a native of Honolulu, is going to supply over 1,000 meals a day for students each day. The veteran quarterback spoke about his contributions to his hometown:
“I’ve been very blessed to be put in a position to help and I think that is a responsibility of mine,” Mariota said, via the Honolulu Star Advertiser.
For the time being, Mariota plans on having the program conducted through April 30. However, if schools remain closed until the end of the school year, then the Raiders quarterback will extend the deadline even further.
Despite the coronavirus causing concern, Mariota and other athletes are offering their aid until things return to normal. Besides Mariota, Zach Ertz and Baker Mayfield are among the long list of players who have extended a helping hand to their local communities.
Throughout his career, Mariota has exuded leadership as the quarterback of an offense. Now, he's proving that his leadership is a valuable trait that remains true off of the field.
