The Oakland Raiders released wide receiver Ryan Grant on Wednesday, the team announced. In a corresponding move, the Raiders promoted linebacker Justin Phillips to the active roster.

Grant had three catches for 16 yards on four targets in Oakland's impressive season-opening win over the Denver Broncos. He was less productive in a dispiriting loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 2, catching one pass for negative yardage despite being targeted on five occasions. Grant was inactive in Week 3, setting the stage for his release.

Grant was a fifth-round pick of the Washington Redskins following a standout career at Tulane. Though he garnered playing time offensively as a rookie, he became a bigger part of the Redskins' offense as a sophomore, when he had 23 catches for 268 yards and two touchdowns. His best season with Washington came two years later, when Grant caught 45 passes for 573 yards and four scores, all career-highs.

The 28-year-old spent last season with the Indianapolis Colts after signing a one-year, $5 million deal in free agency. He had previously agreed to a four-year, $29 million deal with the Baltimore Ravens, but those terms were voided after Grant failed his physical. In 14 games last season, including a career-best 10 starts, he finished with 35 catches for 334 yards and a touchdown.

Grant's release leaves Oakland with just five wide receivers – Tyrell Williams, J.J. Nelson, fifth-round pick Hunter Renfrow, undrafted rookie Keelan Doss, and recent trade acquisition Keelan Doss – currently on the roster. The Raiders waived superstar wide receiver Antonio Brown, who's now without a job, one day before the season-opener.
