Oakland Raiders defensive end Khalil Mack has drawn a lot of attention to himself and his upcoming new contract after sitting out the start of team OTAs. Recent reports indicated that while early contract talks saw the two sides far apart, the Raiders expect to have a deal in place by the start of training camp.

And now, NFL Network’s Steve Wyche has added another interesting bit of information about Mack’s demands. Mack is reportedly asking for over $65 million in guaranteed money on his next deal.

To put that number in perspective, it falls just short of the $70 million in guarantees Von Miller got when the Denver Broncos made him the highest-paid defensive player in the league in 2016.

While Los Angeles Rams star Aaron Donald is widely expected to eclipse Miller as the league’s highest-paid defender with his next contract, Mack also has a right to demand big money on his new deal.

Mack has racked up 40.5 sacks over his first four years in the league with three Pro Bowl nods and two First-Team All-Pro selection. He also won a Defensive Player of the Year, and he did it one year earlier than Donald.

While $65 million is obviously a lot of guaranteed money that’s usually reserved for starting quarterbacks, it’s the going rate for a high-end defensive star like Mack. Things could still change during negotiations, but if the Raiders really want to keep him, they’ll likely have to approach that number in order for Mack to stay in Oakland.
