The Oakland Raiders added a new piece – and another Derek – to their offense. According to a report by Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, tight end Derek Carrier has agreed to a three-year deal with Oakland.

TE Derek Carrier and the Oakland #Raiders agree to a 3yr deal, source said. From Jay Gruden to Jon Gruden in 12 months.

This is some sort of homecoming for Derek Carrier. The 27-year-old tight end entered the pro ranks in 2012, when he was signed a three-year contract worth $1.44 million by Oakland in April of that year. He would be waived by the Raiders months later before being added by the Philadelphia Eagles to their practice squad.

In 2015, he inked a three-year contract worth $2.98 million with the San Francisco 49ers, who then traded him to the Washington Redskins that same year and played for two seasons with the team under head coach Jay Gruden. Last season, Carrier played for the Los Angeles Rams, where he was traded by Washington.

During his stint with the Rams, Carrier recorded just 71 receiving yards on eight catches and 11 targets across 14 games of action. So far in his career, Carrier, who went to Beloit College, only has 327 receiving yards and a touchdown on 36 receptions in 45 games played.

Signing Carrier could also mean that the Raiders are not interested in bringing back tight end Lee Smith, who is set to become a free agent this Wednesday. In any case, Jared Cook is still considered to be the top tight end for the Raiders next season.
