Los Angeles Rams defensive tackle Aaron Donald sat out the team’s entire offseason program this spring as he continues to wait for his new contract. But his next contract won’t be just any other contract.

According to Lindsey Thiry of ESPN, Donald intends to reset the market for non-quarterbacks with his new deal and become the highest paid non-QB in the league.

Donald, 27, wants to reset the market for non-quarterback players. Currently, the highest paid non-quarterback is Denver Broncos linebacker Von Miller, who is scheduled to make more than $19 million this season. Neither Donald nor the Rams have publicly discussed financial terms, but it is thought that Donald is seeking a deal that will pay him more than $20 million per season.

It should come as no surprise to anyone who’s followed the Donald situation that this is his ultimate goal with his next contract. Even Rams general manager Les Snead has admitted that Donald is on the verge of being the highest paid defender in the league.

Donald has certainly proven with his outstanding performances over the first four years of his career that he is indeed worthy of that market-resetting money. He’s already racked up 39 sacks over his first four seasons, with three First-Team All-Pro selections and is also the reigning Defensive Player of the Year.

All in all, it seems hard to believe that the two sides won’t be able to finally get some sort of deal done before training camp. The Rams obviously know they have to pay Donald to keep him happy, and he’s certainly capable of living up to his massive new contract.
