Earlier this week, former NFL head coach Mike Martz made some strong remarks toward Los Angeles Rams first-year head coach Sean McVay where he questioned his expertise as an offensive coordinator.

In the wake of these comments, ESPN's Adam Schefter in an interview on “Mike & Mike in the Morning” on Tuesday fired back at Martz comments.

“I’m a Mike Martz fan. Saying that, I think he’s way off base about Sean McVay. I don’t think the Rams hired “a buddy for Jared Goff.” I think they hired somebody who is one of the brightest young offensive minds in the game. Somebody who is going to be a star, whether he succeeds in coaching or one day goes into broadcasting. And I think we’ve already got to see Sean McVay’s contributions in Jared Goff’s first game out.”

Prior to joining the Rams, McVay had helped Kirk Cousins put together his two most productive seasons as the Washingon Redskins' offensive coordinator. Cousins is also coming off an extremely productive campaign throwing for just shy of 5,000 passing yards along with holding a 97.2 quarterback rating and 67.0 completion percentage.

In fact, Washington's offense in 2016 finished third in yards per game (403.4), second in yards per play (6.40), and was the second-best statistical passing offense (297.4). Keep in mind, McVay is only 31 years old and has worked himself into the position of getting the opportunity to become the youngest head coach in league history.

Although it may just be the preseason, second-year quarterback Jared Goff has looked much improved with his decision making and throws under pressure, which was two areas he struggled tremendously with last year. Ultimately, this is an opportunity for McVay to show that he can transition from being just an offensive coordinator to become a successful NFL head coach.
