The Los Angeles Rams signed veteran safety Eric Weddle last offseason and many thought he would end up being a major steal. Unfortunately, age has been taking its toll on him and he took a step back in 2019. Now, he has decided to hang up the cleats and pursue a life after football.

According to a report from ESPN's Adam Schefter, Weddle has announced his retirement from the NFL after having a very successful career.

Weddle finished his career with 201 games played in 13 seasons. He racked up 1,178 total tackles in that time to go along with 9.5 sacks, eight forced fumbles, five fumble recoveries, 29 interceptions, four defensive touchdowns, and 99 defended passes. Those numbers show what kind of a player Weddle was throughout his career.

At one point in time, Weddle was considered to be one of the top playmaking defensive backs in football. Back in 2017 with the Baltimore Ravens, Weddle racked up six interceptions. He was also the definition of a professional and is leaving behind a great legacy.

Los Angeles has younger options in the secondary and Weddle's role would have been nothing more than depth. That wasn't something that he was interested in. No one can blame him for wanting to go out on top rather than taking a step back and becoming a backup.

We wish Weddle the best in whatever comes next. He would likely make a great coach at some point in the future. No matter what path he chooses to walk, the NFL won't be forgetting Weddle anytime soon.
