Jared Goff couldn't help but notice Carson Wentz's $128 million contract extension. After all, Wentz was selected second overall in 2016 after Goff went with the top pick to the Rams.

The two quarterbacks are linked at the hip.

“You definitely think about it,” Goff said per Gary Klein of the Los Angeles Times. “But at the same time, I know none of that is even possible without playing well on the field, and being available on the field.

“So just continue to do what I’ve been doing the last few years and be myself and let it take care of itself.”

It's difficult not to read Goff's comment on availability as a subtle reminder that while he hasn't missed a game due to injury since being drafted, Wentz has suffered season-ending injuries each of the past two years.

Wentz's deal further highlights the issue of Goff's next contract, which has been looming over the Rams. The team said last week Wentz’s deal didn’t change their timetable for a Goff extension.

At the moment, Goff’s under contract for two more years, including the $22 million-plus fifth-year option for 2020.

There's been chatter that the Rams are not thrilled with the prospects of paying Goff $30 million or more per year, but coach Sean McVay wasn't having any of it.

“Any of the things or narratives that are out there – Jared Goff, as long as I'm fortunate enough to be in this role, hopefully this guy is stuck with me for a long time,” McVay said.
