Former Los Angeles Rams quarterback Jim Everett, the franchise's all-time leader in passing yards, made headlines on Monday, the 26th anniversary of the infamous “Jim ‘Chris' Everett” exchange with sports talk-show host Jim Rome.

Everett, 57, retiring in 1997 with the then–San Diego Chargers, started his NFL career with the Rams, spending the first eight seasons in the pros in Los Angeles after the franchise acquired him out of Purdue after trading for him from the Houston Oilers, who selected him third overall in the 1986 NFL Draft.

Everett took the “anniversary” in stride on Monday, responding to fans and social media users about the on-air conflict with Rome.

“Seems like yesterday,” the former pro quarterback wrote on Twitter this morning, adding a winking emoji for effect.

“Definitely not planned or scripted,” Everett also added when replying to an interested fan on the exchange. Rome called Everett “Chris” based on women's professional tennis player Chris Evert, a not-so-subtle and frankly unwholesome way to dig at the gunslinger for the perception that he did not want to be hit in the pocket during games.

Rome hosted his show, “Jim Rome Is Burning” for years, broadcast on ESPN, before severing ties with the Worldwide Leader nine years ago. Since then Rome has hosted “The Jim Rome Show” on sports radio for CBS, although the controversy with Everett of the Rams has dogged the broadcaster's career for 26 years, too.
