The Los Angeles Rams will begin their quest to make it back to the Super Bowl when they open up the 2019 NFL season on the road against the Carolina Panthers, according to Joe Person of The Athletic.

The Rams are coming off of a 2018 campaign in which they won 12 games and captured the NFC West division title, locking up a first-round bye. They then went on to defeat the Dallas Cowboys in the Divisional Round, and the following week, they topped the New Orleans Saints in overtime in a controversial NFC Championship Game to move on to the Super Bowl, where they fell to the New England Patriots.

It marked the Rams' first postseason appearance since the 2004 campaign.

Meanwhile, the Panthers won just seven games this past season in spite of getting off to a 6-2 start. Carolina fumbled to a 1-7 record in the second half of the year, primarily due to the fact that quarterback Cam Newton experienced shoulder issues over the latter half of the 2018 campaign, resulting in the Panthers shutting him down for the final two games of the season.

Newton then underwent arthroscopic surgery on his shoulder earlier this offseason, marking the second procedure on his throwing shoulder in a year-and-a-half. He is now on the road to recovery, and it seems like he is progressing well.

This will provide a big opportunity for both teams to get off to a strong start, as the Rams are the defending NFC champions and the Panthers will not be pushovers with a healthy Newton under center.
