The Los Angeles Rams knew they had to be careful with their money this offseason and it appears they got a bargain signing backup quarterback Blake Bortles for only $1 million according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.

It is a cheap contract no doubt, but it seems that Bortles basically got to pick his spot and could give the team he wanted a good bargain for his services. Bortles is already getting $6.5 million from the Jaguars this offseason so any contract he signed gets taken out of that contract. With Bortles signing for $1 million that means that the Jaguars now will only have to pay him $5.5 million.

Bortles struggled last year with the Jaguars but this is a guy who still has playoff experience and is by all accounts a very good teammate. The $1 million dollar contract is 49th in terms of NFL quarterbacks contracts and is cheaper than guys like Matt Barkley and Derek Anderson.

The hope for the Rams is that Jared Goff will stay healthy enough next year that Bortles won't have to play but if he does go down, the Rams are in a good situation. This is probably a really good move for Bortles career now that he gets to work with Sean McVay.

McVay did wonders helping develop Goff and maybe he will be able to get Bortles to take the next step forward and he can get another chance to be a starting quarterback again sometime soon. If that were to happen it would probably be on another team not named the Rams.
