When the Los Angeles Rams signed safety Eric Weddle to a two-year deal earlier this year, it was done in an effort to bring more leadership and skill to the team’s already talented secondary. While he hasn’t been on the team too long, Rams cornerback Marcus Peters is already seeing the benefits of having him on the team.

Speaking to ESPN about what Weddle brings to the team, Peters was quick to praise the safety.

“He's really a coach on the field,” Peters said. “The way that he's disguising and giving you opportunities to make plays just based off his disguise, it's amazing to have him here.”

Not only is Weddle one of the most highly regarded safeties in the league, but he’s also managed to earn the respect of Wade Phillips, perhaps one of the best defensive coordinators ever. Speaking of Weddle, Phillips also notes how smart he is when it comes to figuring out plays.

“He's a really smart guy, smarter than I am, I know,” Phillips says. “He anticipates so much and helps other players so much by helping them anticipate by saying, ‘Hey watch for this, do this, this might be coming.'”

“He will come to us about things and say, ‘Why don't we do this or that?'” Phillips says. “And we say, ‘Yeah, let's do that.' That's the way he is; he's thinking football all the time, and he's got a real sharp mind, football IQ.”

Weddle aims to replace Lamarcus Joyner, who left the Rams to sign with the Oakland Raiders in free agency. He’ll join a secondary that’s already loaded with talent, including Aquib Talib, Marcus Peters, and John Johnson III, who has become a rising talent in his own right. With the Rams also sporting a fierce defensive line and Wade Phillips calling the plays, it wouldn’t be surprising to once again see them make a run to the Super Bowl.
