When the Los Angeles Rams traded for Matthew Stafford in the offseason, it sent in motion a clear-cut plan to go out and try and win a Super Bowl now. A big part of those offensive plans was supposed to be running back Cam Akers. But, after going down with an achilles injury, Akers will miss all of the 2021 season.

Stafford spoke to reporters recently and via ProFootballTalk, he discussed the impact of not having Akers in the backfield and what the mindset is for the Rams now.

“Really tough to see that happen to a young guy that’s a really promising, talented player,” Stafford told reporters. “Unfortunately, that’s kind of the name of the game in the NFL. You hate to see it happen in the offseason when we’re playing a game or something, but it’s next man up..Cam was a really productive player as a young guy last year. And we were looking for a lot out of them this year. But next man up, we’ll go from there. Wish him the best obviously.”

Akers really burst onto the scene late in the 2020-21 season and earned plenty of touches in the Rams' two playoff games. The second-year back was set to be the bell cow in Sean McVay's offense this year and now those plans have drastically changed for LA. Still, Stafford has plenty of faith in the running game.

“I think I have a lot of belief and a lot of trust in the guys that we have in that locker room and on the coaching staff to no matter who’s back there, we’re going to have a successful running game.”

While Akers will be missed being out for the year, it's next man up for the Rams.
