The Los Angeles Rams made headlines with their decision to jettison running back Todd Gurley this offseason. Fortunately, running back Malcolm Brown is optimistic about emerging into a potential successor heading into the 2020 NFL season.

Brown provides the Rams some much-needed continuity in the backfield alongside their talented, new additions in Darrell Henderson and Cam Akers. The veteran is embracing the prospect of taking on a bigger role in Gurley's absence this season, via Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk:

“It’s been easy to fall into that role,” Brown told reporters on Monday. “I knew right when [Gurley] left, I would probably play a bigger of a role. It’s easy in that running back room because we all want to learn and we all want to get better. So there is nothing drastic that’s happened or anything like that. But, like I said, throughout training camp, we’ll see how we’ll fall into our roles and everything like that. But everybody in that room wants to learn and wants to get better and we play off of each other. It makes it so much easier.”

Rams head coach Sean McVay and general manager Les Snead have indicated that they will likely go with a committee in the backfield to start the season. Of course, it remains to be seen just how the pecking order will shake out.

The Rams have ushered in a bit of a youth movement by bringing Henderson and Akers in through the last two drafts. Regardless, Brown still has good reason to be confident given his experience with McVay's offense since the restrictions placed in response to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic this offseason have hindered the transition process for rookies this offseason.

Although their roles will likely fluctuate based on overall performance and tempo of each game throughout the year, Brown's veteran presence should serve as a stabilizing factor in this young backfield for the Rams.
