Los Angeles Rams coach Sean McVay admits that a new kicker, of all things, will slightly change how he operates his offense moving forward.

For those unaware, the Rams have lost kicker Greg Zuerlein for the season with a herniated disc in his back. For now, Sam Ficken will be tasked with being the team's new kicker.

How much and how exactly does this change how Sean McVay will operate?

“Just a little bit, yes,” McVay told reporters, via PFT. “I think just because of the range that Greg has – you’ve got confidence in our ability to be able to make kicks, but I think the range that Greg has when you just look at the distance that he can consistently hit it from. That will change a little bit. But in terms of, ‘Are we going to be going for it on fourth downs and things like that?’ That won’t change. I think just the distance at which you would punt as opposed to maybe attempt a field goal because of the range that Greg has, that would really be the only thing that would be altered with our approach just right now.”

The flip of preferring to punt instead of kicking a field goal because of downgrading in a kicker is that the team might actually end up going for it on fourth downs slightly more often. Or, you know, maybe McVay is being sincere in his suggestion that the Rams will punt more.

He seems to only be talking about it relative to punt-FG decisions, with the going for it on fourth down stuff not being altered at all.

Only time will tell.
