The Los Angeles Rams exercised the fifth-year option on quarterback Jared Goff on Tuesday, ensuring that Goff will, at the very least, be around through 2020.

Obviously, the hope is to have him under center much longer than that, and Rams head coach Sean McVay is looking forward to many years of Goff leading the team:

“This is a guy that is the ultimate leader, and he's only getting better and better,” said McVay, according to Greg Beacham of The Associated Press. “We feel so good about him leading our team for many years to come.”

McVay added that he and Goff are “growing together.”

The 24-year-old is coming off of a terrific 2018 campaign in which he threw for 4,688 yards, 32 touchdowns and 12 interceptions while completing 64.9 percent of his passes and registering a passer rating of 101.1 en route to a Pro Bowl appearance.

Most importantly, Goff led the Rams to 12 wins and an NFC West division title and then took them all the way to the Super Bowl before they fell to the New England Patriots.

Goff, who played his collegiate football at the University of California, was originally selected by Los Angeles with the first overall pick of the 2016 NFL Draft.

He had a rough rookie year, making seven starts and throwing for 1,089 yards, five touchdowns and seven picks while completing 54.6 percent of his passes and posting a passer rating of 63.6.

The following season, however, McVay took over as head coach, and Goff flourished, finishing with 3,804 yards, 28 touchdowns and seven interceptions, earning a Pro Bowl selection as a result.
