If Sean McVay was getting extended, so was Jared Goff. According to NBC Sports' Peter King on “The Herd,” the Los Angeles Rams head coach wasn't going to sign his contract extension (that runs through 2023) unless the team re-upped on his quarterback.

Said King:

“When I visited the Rams in camp and spent some time Sean McVay, there is two things that really impressed me. One is that he was absolutely, totally, unequivicolly all-in with Jared Goff… When McVay did his contract, he said to the Rams brass ‘hey listen, I want Jared Goff to get done too, I do not want this to be any sort of question, any sort of damocles sword hanging over our head.'”

In the end, McVay got just what he wanted. Five weeks after the Rams gave the head coach his extension through 2023, the team gave Goff a four-year, $134 million deal with a record-breaking $110 million in guarantees. The deal kicks in after Goff's rookie deal ends after 2020.

Why did McVay want Goff? Since the coach's arrival in 2017, the Rams have been on a tear, in large part due to the communication and growth McVay and Goff have created. Since McVay became the head coach of the Rams, Goff has made two Pro Bowls, was a Super Bowl starter, and won 26 regular season games compared to five losses.

Goff has his shortcomings — shown in the playoffs — but he fits well with McVay. At 24 years old, he has a lot of football ahead of him. McVay turned around his career from winless No. 1 pick rookie to Pro Bowler; Goff is the quarterback who has helped prove McVay belongs in the NFL.
