Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay says that he is optimistic the team will re-sign left tackle Andrew Whitworth, according to Lindsey Thiry of ESPN.com.

“We're pretty confident,” McVay said when asked about reaching a deal with Whitworth. “He still played a really high level last year. His impact isn't exclusive to just playing the left tackle position.”

Whitworth contemplated retirement after the 2019 campaign, but he then revealed that he would be returning in 2020.

The 38-year-old started every game for the Rams this past season, and while he wasn't quite as impressive as years past, he remained a steady force along Los Angeles' offensive line.

Whitworth, who played his collegiate football at LSU, was originally selected by the Cincinnati Bengals in the second round (55th pick overall) of the 2006 NFL Draft.

The Monroe, La. native actually improved during the second half of his tenure with the Bengals, making his first Pro Bowl appearance in 2012 and then notching a couple of more trips to the Pro Bowl in 2015 and 2016, also earning a First-Team All-Pro selection in the former season.

Whitworth then signed a three-year deal with the Rams in March 2017, and in his first year in LA, Whitworth made another Pro Bowl and notched First-Team All-Pro honors again.

Since joining Los Angeles, Whitworth has played in all but one game, and dating back to 2014, that is the only game that Whitworth missed during that time period.

The Rams went just 9-7 and missed the playoffs in 2019, one year after making it all the way to the Super Bowl.
