There was once a time when Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay never thought quarterback Jared Goff would leave. But once the opportunity to trade for Matthew Stafford arose, the Rams pulled the trigger. Fast forward to now and Stafford led the franchise to a Super Bowl in February, while Goff is left trying to get the Lions out of the gutter in the NFC North.

However, in a recent interview with Mike Silver on the Open Mike podcast, McVay revealed his biggest regret from Goff's time with the Rams: Not communicating enough with the signal-caller:

“That was a hard thing for me because the thing that’s more important than anything is being a good communicator — clear, open, and honest. Making sure people aren’t caught off guard and really having respect for the players and the coaches for what they have to do. And I wish that there had been better in-person communication,” the Rams HC said. “The one thing that hurt me is that I would never want anything to be misunderstood about my appreciation, my respect for Jared. Was it a tough decision? Yes. Were there some things that I could’ve handled better in terms of the clarity provided for him? No doubt.

“If I had it over again, what I would do is, before I had even gone to Cabo, when there was a possibility of, alright, if Matthew Stafford’s available, if there’s other quarterbacks available, that would be something that we would explore — you sit down with him, you look him in the eye, you tell him that instead of calling him and setting up a meeting where that was my intention when I got back from Cabo.”

Goff surely didn't expect to be traded by the Rams therefore McVay is basically saying he wishes the QB was told by him first-hand before the blockbuster went down. It's unfortunate everything materialized the way it did, but there are always going to be things a coach regrets with former players.

Goff definitely played well during his time with the Rams from 2017 to 2020, leading them to Super Bowl LIII where LA lost 13-3 to Tom Brady and the New England Patriots. He went 42-20 as a starter before moving onto Detroit.
