The Los Angeles Rams stirred some controversy among their fans on Thursday by releasing Todd Gurley. Not long after the move was made, Sean McVay spoke out on the Rams releasing Gurley.

“I would like to thank Todd for his many contributions to the Rams, on and off the field, since I have been here,” Rams coach Sean McVay said in a statement. “He has meant a lot to my growth as a coach and leader and he will always be remembered as one of the all-time great Rams. I wish him nothing but the best.”

Even before McVay became the head coach of the Rams in 2017, Gurley already proved he was one of the elite running backs in the NFL. In his first two seasons in the NFL, Gurley amassed 1,991 rushing yards and 16 touchdowns.

Then, in his first season with McVay, the former first-round pick rushed for a career-high 1,305 yards and scored 19 total touchdowns. That same season, Gurley proceeded to take home the hardware as the 2017 Offensive Player of the Year.

To reward him for his production, the Rams chose to sign Gurley to a four-year, $57.5 million extension prior to the 2018 season. But in Week 1 of the 2018 season, everything began to tumble downhill for Los Angeles and Gurley.

Despite contributing 1,831 yards from scrimmage and a career-high 21 touchdowns in 2018, a knee injury cast a dark cloud over the Rams. While McVay and Los Angeles reached the Super Bowl in 2018, the overlying concern was Gurley's health.

At one point, it seemed as if Los Angeles was building a team that could contend for years together. Now, before he even got an opportunity to play in SoFi Stadium, Gurley's career with the Rams is coming to an abrupt end.
