Many are wondering who the Los Angeles Rams insert as their No. 1 running back and Sean McVay is refusing to name a sole starter. Ahead of the team's Week 1 bout against the Dallas Cowboys, McVay spoke about implementing a dynamic running back strategy.

“I think as the season unfolds, that might give us some clarity if someone separates themselves,” McVay said, via Kevin Modesti of the Los Angeles Daily News. “But we’re going to go into it with three different backs, three different skill sets, that present a change of pace and different dynamic that they can present to defenses. I think that can help keep people off balance as well.”

Following the release of Todd Gurley, the Rams have a few running backs that could command roles in the offense. Second-year back Darrell Henderson and veteran Malcolm Brown should see some touches to begin the season. Though, Henderson is dealing with an injury that could sideline him in Week 1.

Meanwhile, Los Angeles also used their No. 52 pick in the 2020 NFL Draft on Cam Akers. The rookie rusher out of Florida State impressed during training camp and figures to emerge as one of the top options in the offense.

In recent seasons, the Rams coach has watched Kyle Shanahan deploy a conglomerate of running backs with the San Francisco 49ers with fruitful results. After seeing the success that the 49ers had in 2019, McVay is open to giving multiple guys touches to keep defenses guessing.

However, McVay also points out that one of the running backs could earn the No. 1 spot on the depth chart if they separate themselves among the pack.
