Super Bowl 53 will feature two former Georgia running backs in Todd Gurley for the Los Angeles Rams and Sony Michel for the New England Patriots. Gurley is hoping his history with Michel does not come back to bite him.

Both players were part of a star-studded Bulldog backfield several years ago. According to Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk, Gurley recalls taking a young Michel under his wing.

“I remember when he first came in, he couldn’t run and catch,” Gurley said. “I had to teach him how to do all that stuff.”

Gurley added that he is hoping Michel will revert back to his college days before he became a star.

“Hopefully everything I taught him, he doesn’t do it and he just plays like he used to play before I taught him everything,” Gurley said.

Georgia undoubtedly had one of the most talented backfields in the nation at that time. Gurley, of course, was the big man on campus by the time Michel arrived. However, it ultimately produced three future workhorse backs in Gurley, Michel, and Cleveland Browns running back Nick Chubb.

It is easy to see where Gurley may have had an impact on Michel's development. Both players boast versatile skill sets as both electrifying runners and viable pass-catchers. Gurley's comments indicate that Michel was not doing much of either when he arrived in Georgia. Fortunately, he was able to find his footing and is now poised to finish his rookie season by playing in a Super Bowl.
