The Los Angeles Rams had to face a scary reality last season. Todd Gurley isn't always going to be around. The running back struggled with knee issues near the end of the season (and into the playoffs). In fact, it caused his usage in the Super Bowl to be a lot lower than anyone would've expected.

The issues crept into the offseason, and there was a lot of fear that he'd never be the same again. Los Angeles is taking steps to ensure that's not the case. According to Logan Reardon of NFL.com, the Rams are going with the “veteran plan” to keep Gurley healthy.

That plan means Gurley won't play in the preseason. He'll also be taking it “day-by-day” in practice. Therefore, you probably won't see him all the time if you're scouting practices pretty heavily.

You'll also probably see a lot more of what's happened so far for the running back. He's not running plays nearly as much, taking breaks and at points just watching the first-team offense work.

Giving Gurley a small workload is the clear, correct move here. The running back has been around long enough now that having a few preseason carries isn't an essential thing for him.  The main focus should be on staying healthy — no point in running him in meaningless games risking injury a little more.

Yes, you could argue this point with anyone, but Gurley's a special case. Most people don't have the severe knee issues he had last year. If done correctly, this could keep Todd Gurley healthy in 2019 – and help to extend his career a little longer.
