The Los Angeles Rams were not a very good team in 2016. Their offense was the worst in the league, in part because running back Todd Gurley wasn’t put in a position to succeed. After a promising rookie season, Gurley regressed badly as he had a mere 3.2 yards per carry amidst defenses not fearing the passing game and loading the box solely to stop him.

But that disastrous season led to head coach Sean McVay coming in for Jeff Fisher, and the Rams offense immediately took off under the young offensive prodigy. Gurley, who ended up having a great year in 2017, is grateful for the fact that McVay came aboard in Los Angeles and helped them achieve their surprising success.

“Thank God for Coach McVay coming in here and putting us in a great position,” Gurley said on NFL Network.

McVay was able to unleash Gurley’s true potential last season as the running back had 2,093 yards from scrimmage and 19 total touchdowns en route to winning the Offensive Player of the Year award.

But apart from Gurley, McVay also coaxed improvement from the likes of quarterback Jared Goff and wideout Robert Woods. As a result, the Rams had the top scoring offense in the league in 2017 with nearly 30 points per game.

It’ll be a tough task for the Rams to top that type of performance. But with a full year of experience in McVay’s offense under their belt, not to mention the arrival of another deadly playmaker in wideout Brandin Cooks, Gurley and the rest of the Rams offense could potentially get even better this season.

That would be bad news for opposing defenses. And if the Rams’ own star-studded defense lives up to its potential, LA should be the Super Bowl contender many expect them to be this season.
