The Los Angeles Rams made headlines last year when they paired the youngest head coach in NFL history with the oldest coach in the league. However, it is clear that the duo of Sean McVay and Wade Phillips have established something special in Los Angeles.

It goes without saying that Phillips has worked with his fair share of Hall of Fame coaches throughout his career. He said during an appearance on the Adam Schefter Podcast that McVay shares many of the same qualities they do:

“Sean is right up there with all these guys that I was able to work with and work for. He's a really smart guy but he's got a lot of common sense to him and he really works with people well,” Phillips said. “I've been around guys that are real smart but don't have a lot of common sense sometimes. To me, he's got the whole package.”

Phillips' comments certainly carry plenty of weight considering how long he has coached in the NFL. He even compared McVay to the likes of his father and NFL legend Bum Phillips in terms of how well they interact with players. Needless to say, this is one of the many qualities that make the young head coach so revered after his first season in charge.

The Rams received their fair share of criticism when they mad McVay the youngest head coach in league history. However, it is clear that they have struck a balance between his youth and Phillips' experience to help turn this franchise around. This will be a big year for the both of them with the expectations in Los Angeles now sky-high after they followed up their promising 2017 campaign with a star-studded offseason.
