There's renewed buzz around the Los Angeles Rams franchise coming into the season with Matthew Stafford. The former Detroit Lions quarterback gives the team much more stability after a rocky season with Jared Goff at the helm.

But apparently, the Stafford-to-Rams deal wasn't seen as the likely outcome as the Lions shopped their QB. According to NFL insider Ian Rapoport, the Carolina Panthers were seen as the clear frontrunners with a deal nearly done for the former Pro Bowler. However, the man himself stepped in.

Sources say that's when Stafford — who makes his first start for the Rams on Sunday night versus the Bears — stepped in. After consulting with his family, he made clear that he wanted to go to the Rams and so did his family. Stafford made his voice heard, and the Lions brass listened.

Those conversations in Cabo between Matthew Stafford and head coach Sean McVay right after the trade were probably very interesting. The Rams have their start as the enter the new season with renewed hope for a run at the Super Bowl.
