Martin Perez and the Texas Rangers are reportedly not close on a contract, per Jon Morosi. If no deal is completed within the next two days, a qualifying offer will likely be made to Perez.

Perez would then either sign the qualifying offer with Texas or enter free agency. If he were to sign elsewhere, the Rangers would receive a compensatory draft pick. The last day to make a qualifying offer is November 10th, so that is expected to be the Rangers' last resort should no contract come to fruition. Perez would have 10 days to accept or decline the offer from Texas.

Martin Perez is fresh off of an All-Star caliber campaign. The left-hander pitched to the tune of a 2.89 ERA to go along with 169 strikeouts in just under 200 innings of work. He displayed signs of stardom as well as durability.

The Rangers are hopeful for the 2023 season with Bruce Bochy leading the charge. He's an experienced winner capable of helping Texas return to the playoffs. However, this is a team that needs starting pitching. Jon Gray and Martin Perez were their 1-2 punch in 2022. If they lose Perez in free agency, their rotation will look extremely thin.

It should be noted that the Rangers have been linked to Clayton Kershaw. Kershaw, a Texas native, is expected to either sign with the Rangers or Dodgers in free agency. The Rangers will be in a good position if they re-sign Martin Perez and land Kershaw.

This is shaping up to be an intriguing offseason in Texas.
