Following a trade that sent star forward Kawhi Leonard to the Toronto Raptors, the star has now lost the chance to claim a supermax deal that could pay him as much as $221 million over five years. According to cap enthusiast Albert Nahmad, Leonard could make as much as $190 million deal by committing to five more years with the Raptors next season, but would only garner $141 million over a four-year deal with any other team as a free agent, shaving $70 million in potential earnings.

Leonard is reportedly very unhappy with the San Antonio Spurs for trading him anywhere else other than the Los Angeles Lakers, but the organization had full control of his rights for a whole season and they made the most of it, getting the best package available for his services, now with another immediate building block in DeMar DeRozan.

The 27-year-old injured star could see his earnings plummet if he wants to wind up in his hometown of Los Angeles, but he could have only lost $31 million if the Spurs had traded him to the Lakers, instead of the Raptors — making this the best $40 million-middle-finger in the history of recent sports.

Leonard had a falling out with the Spurs organization after his camp disagreed with his initial diagnosis following a quad injury in the Western Conference Finals against the Golden State Warriors in 2017. Sides never recovered from the incident, now giving the Raptors another starting block in hopes to take control of a depleted Eastern Conference.
