Toronto Raptors swingman Patrick McCaw will not return to Wednesday night's game after reportedly suffering a facial contusion, per Eric Koreen of The Athletic:

McCaw played less than a minute before getting hit in the face. He was immediately removed from the game and taken to the locker room for further evaluation.

This is another frustrating setback for the 24-year-old, who essentially missed the first half of the season after undergoing a surgical procedure on his left knee in November.

McCaw had actually returned from that procedure to become an effective rotation player for the Raptors. The former UNLV product was averaging 5.7 points, 2.6 assists 2.2 rebounds and 1.2 steals through his first 22 games, and he had started in 11 of those appearances.

This appeared to be the season McCaw would finally see regular playing time. Although McCaw was a vital bench piece for the Golden State Warriors in his first two seasons, he actually rejected their contract offer at the end of the 2017-18 season. He signed with the Cleveland Cavaliers only to be released just one week later, and the Raptors brought him on board shortly thereafter.

There is no telling how much time he will miss with this latest injury. Hopefully for McCaw and the Raptors, it is merely a blip on the radar and will not lead to an extensive absence.

McCaw has given Toronto vital depth with his ability to play multiple positions and compete at a high level on the defensive end of the floor. Especially considering the Raptors might soon face decisions on the likes of Kyle Lowry, Marc Gasol and Serge Ibaka–all of whom are on expiring contracts–they will want McCaw back in the rotation as soon as possible.
