NBA legend Vince Carter might witness a rather anticlimactic end to his playing career depending on what happens with the 2019-20 season. Memorabilia from his playing days with the Toronto Raptors will get harder to come by the minute.

Tas Melas, former host of “The Starters” on NBA TV and currently with The Athletic, thought he had snatched a gem by winning a $125 signed Raptors program in a silent auction — one that had what he thought was Carter's autograph.

He took to Twitter to brag about his sneaky acquisition:

Carter, who was tagged in the post, was quick to be the bearer of bad news:

As it turns out, Melas wasn't all that saddened by getting former Raptors guard Alvin Williams' autograph:

But Williams wouldn't take long to deny that being his signature as well:

Ouch, that's got to sting.

Melas was at least thankful he was one step closer in this NBA Twitter investigation:

Folks quickly matched one of John Wallace's signatures to match that of Melas' auction-won program.

And there you have it, Mr. Melas, that's $125 for a John Wallace autograph and a 20-year-old Raptors program containing some sweet memories:
