The Toronto Raptors may have Kawhi Leonard and Kyle Lowry and they may have had DeMar DeRozan, but nobody will ever be as special to Raptors fans as Vince Carter.

With Carter likely to retire at the end of the 2018-19 campaign, the subject of Toronto potentially retiring his No. 15 was broached by Michael Scotto of The Athletic during a question-and-answer session with the man formerly known as Air Canada.

His response:

“Oh, it would definitely mean a lot,” said Carter. “It’s just the cycle was broken and just the change when you walk into the arena now that it’s been a few years and the appreciation for my time there. It doesn’t get any better than that. Obviously, like every player when you play this game, your ultimate goal, of course, is to win a championship, and when you walk away from the game, you hope to walk into an arena and see your jersey up there. For that to happen, that would be amazing, and that would be a dream come true.”

Carter's tenure in Toronto did not exactly end on good terms, as bad blood between he and the organization resulted in a trade to the New Jersey Nets back in December 2004.

The Dunk Contest legend was then heavily booed upon returning to Toronto as a member of the Nets, a vitriol that continued through 2014 until Raptors fans finally forgave Carter during a video tribute. Carter, who was a member of the Memphis Grizzlies at the team, was given a standing ovation as he wiped tears from his face.
