In addition to Lamar Jackson testing positive for COVID-19 on Thursday, four other Baltimore Ravens players have tested positive as well, placing Sunday's game with the Pittsburgh Steelers in jeopardy of being postponed, which could have significant effects on the NFL schedule and season.

At press time, the NFL has not made a decision on the Ravens-Steelers game. However, league insiders are reacting in ways which point to the game being postponed from its current Sunday slot at 1:15 p.m. Eastern.

The NFL has a contingency plan in place to have a Week 18 (Sunday, Jan. 10) to make up any meaningful games postponed due to COVID-19. “Meaningful” is defined as having an impact on postseason qualification or seeding.

A Ravens-Steelers postponement, if it occurs, would lead to a Week 18 and push back the playoff schedule one week.

This is where things could become complicated and contentious: The NFL has not approved a Week 19, a second week in which to make up postponed games. Therefore, if any games can't be played through Week 18 (Jan. 10), they will be canceled. Ravens-Steelers being canceled would be an explosive event.

In the event of a Ravens-Steelers cancellation, the NFL's COVID-19 plan would get rid of a wild-card-round bye in both conferences. The Steelers (AFC) and the New Orleans Saints (NFC) would be deprived of byes if the season ended today and this component of the NFL's plan went into effect.

Alongside the wild-card bye being wiped out, one extra playoff berth would be granted in each conference. The Miami Dolphins and Chicago Bears, among other teams, would stand to benefit.
