The Baltimore Ravens are in pole position to sign free agent Jadeveon Clowney, according to Tony Pauline of Pro Football Network.

“A lot of people in the league believe that in end, he’s going to end up with the Baltimore Ravens,” Pauline said on Thursday in the latest episode of the NFL Draft Insiders podcast, via Baltimore Beatdown. “The Ravens need an upgrade with their pass rush. The belief from league insiders is don’t be surprised if he ends up with the Baltimore Ravens.”

At the beginning of the NFL free agency, Clowney was demanding a multi-year deal worth around $20 million per year. However, after negotiations with multiple teams, he has still not signed with a franchise.

According to Spotrac, the Ravens have around $15 million in cap space, but with a couple cuts to their roster, they could free up enough money to sign the Clowney.

The Ravens have been in desperate need to add more pass rushers to their defensive line after losing Za'Darius Smith and Terrell Suggs in 2019. Furthermore, as of right now, the Ravens pass rush consists of a fairly young players in Matthew Judon, Jaylon Ferguson and Tyus Bowser. Adding a proven veteran player like Clowney will most certainly strengthen their defense this season.

For what's it worth, Clowney said at the beginning of free agency that he wanted to sign with a contender, and Baltimore will very much be contenders this season following its league-best record in 2019.

The Ravens will play their first regular season game against the Cleveland Browns on Sept. 13.
