Lamar Jackson was drafted by the Baltimore Ravens in the first round in this year's NFL Draft, and it made some wonder if there was going to be a quarterback controversy. Joe Flacco is the established veteran on this team but when a team takes a quarterback in the first round they are the future of the team, and the question was how fast is the future going to come.

Ravens coach John Harbaugh has repeated time and time again this is still Flacco's team, and according to Jeff Zrebiec of The Athletic, if Jackson were to start a game this year, it would be because Flacco went down with an injury.

They didn’t draft Jackson to start at quarterback this year. The plan always was to develop him at quarterback for a year or two, while in the meantime finding ways to get the ball in his hands and utilize his unique skill set on offense.

If Jackson starts a game at quarterback this season, it will almost surely be because Flacco is either hurt or the team’s season has become a lost cause and they start evaluating for the future. The Ravens remain Flacco’s team, for better or worse.

Harbaugh also made it clear that Jackson would still see the field this year but it's not clear how many times a game that will be.

Jackson has too much athleticism not to see the field even if it's just for a few gadget plays here and there. If Flacco does start to struggle early on this year, don't be surprised if fans start calling for Jackson to take over full time. Right now that is not in the Ravens plan, and it would take a lot to change it.
