It was revealed that the New Orleans Saints attempted to conduct a sign-and-trade to acquire Jadeveon Clowney, but the NFL wouldn't allow the transaction to take place. In the event that the league did approve a sign-and-trade, the Baltimore Ravens would have been the team awarded Clowney — not the Saints, per ProFootballTalk's Mike Florio.

With time running out ahead of the 2020 season for Jadeveon Clowney to sign with a team, the Saints and the Tennessee Titans were the two front runners to bring him in. There were other teams in the mix and it appears that Baltimore made an outside attempt to land the Pro Bowl edge rusher.

Of course, Jadeveon Clowney would decide to ink a one-year deal with the Titans, reuniting him with Mike Vrabel. However, before he chose to head to Tennessee, the Saints would discuss an elaborate ploy to acquire Clowney.

Due to their dire cap situation, New Orleans wanted the Cleveland Browns to sign Jadeveon Clowney for them. Then, the Saints would proceed to send a second-round pick to the Browns and pay $10 million of the $15 million contract that Cleveland would have signed him to.

On the other hand, the Ravens compiled a sign-and-trade plan that involved the Jacksonville Jaguars signing Jadeveon Clowney. Similar to the Saints' plan, Baltimore would send a draft pick to entice Jacksonville to complete the move.

Nevertheless, the league wouldn't authorize the move and neither team was given a chance to add him via trade. But if the NFL did elect to ratify the idea of a sign-and-trade for Jadeveon Clowney, New Orleans would have discovered they weren't the only ones working behind the scenes to try and get him.
