Baltimore Ravens longtime quarterback Joe Flacco appears to be the backup for the Ravens for the first time in his 11-year career. Rookie quarterback Lamar Jackson received a golden opportunity weeks ago when he filled in for Flacco as he recovered from a hip injury.

Jackson has brought a new look to the Ravens' offense and has led Baltimore to three victories since taking over the job. Baltimore won three in a row until facing Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs, but did manage to hang in there and force the game into overtime.

Flacco came into the league in 2008 and has started in nearly every game since being drafted. Aside from some injuries over the years, Flacco has played in nearly every game except for the six he missed back in 2010.

According to Darin Gannt of Pro Football Talk, “I can’t say I was surprised,” Flacco said, via Jeff Zrebiec of The Athletic. “Anything can happen in this league and we’re right in the middle of a playoff run.”

Flacco added, “I’ve obviously had five weeks to think about it and prepare myself for the possibility,” he said. “This is my situation right now and I’m going to do my best to handle it the right way.”

It's sad to see a long-term starter lose their job in any circumstance, especially such a great competitor like Flacco. The Ravens have a stud in Lamar Jackson and it's clear that this is the direction that the team will likely be heading in next season and beyond.
