Baltimore Ravens general manager Ozzie Newsome has been one of the most prominent executives in the NFL over the last two decades. However, it seems his time is set to come to an end with the emergence of his successor, Eric DeCosta.

Team owner Steve Bisciotti has been adamant about DeCosta assuming Newsome's position at some point in the near future. According to NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport, Bisciotti announced that it will happen at the end of the 2018 season:

Ravens owner Steve Bisciotti announces at a press conference that legendary GM Ozzie Newsome will step down next year and Eric DeCosta will take over.

DeCosta reportedly fielded plenty of interest from a number of teams throughout the league, which ultimately sped up the process for Baltimore.

Eric DeCosta has received countless requests for GM interviews. He has often turned them down. Teams felt he would never leave, so he’d eventually be the Ravens GM. Now, he will be.

DeCosta has been in the Ravens' front office since 2010 and has played an instrumental role in helping to bring a bevy of Pro Bowl-caliber players through Baltimore. As a result, his future promotion has been somewhat of an inevitability over the past several years.

Newsome made history by becoming the first African-American GM in NFL history. He will now step down as one of the NFL's more successful general managers over the last 20 years, winning two Super Bowls during his tenure with Baltimore, and a bevy of playoff appearances. That said, it will be interesting to see if he stays in the scouting department or as a consultant with the team.
