Baltimore Ravens quarterback Robert Griffin III will be facing the Washington Redskins for the first time since his departure in 2016. However, RGIII has downplayed the significance of going up against his old team, saying it will be nothing special.

“I've got nothing but love for the Washington Redskins and the organization,” Griffin said Tuesday per Jamison Hensley of ESPN. “They drafted me in 2012 and gave [me] an opportunity to play this game that I've dreamed of playing for most of my life. If I get that opportunity to go out there and play against them, it won't be any more special or less special. But I'll always know where I started.”

Griffin spent his first three years in the league with the Redskins, who drafted him No. 2 overall in the 2012 NFL Draft. He immediately burst onto the scene as he delivered an electrifying debut season which saw him win Rookie of the Year and lead the Redskins to the postseason. Unfortunately, he was unable to recapture that first-year magic as injuries and inconsistent play soon saw him flame out.

But while RGIII isn’t putting much stock in facing the Redskins in the preseason finale, the game will still be of major importance for him personally. It’ll be his last chance to impress the Ravens coaches and convince them to keep him on the 53-man roster.

The Ravens already have first-round pick Lamar Jackson waiting in the wings behind Joe Flacco and may render RGIII expendable. But the veteran will at least have one more shot to show he still gives them the better option behind Flacco at this point in time.
