Robert Griffin III saw action for the first time since 2016 on Sunday. He came in the third quarter of the against the Atlanta Falcons after starter Lamar Jackson was knocked out with a suspected concussion.

RGIII then completed two of his four pass attempts for 21 yards. It eventually led to a field-goal score by the team. But his newfound playing time was short-lived as Jackson returned a few moments later.

However, Griffin was grateful for the brief time that he was able to play again.

“Personally, it’s emotional because a year ago no one thought I’d be playing in the NFL ever again,” Griffin said, via Garrett Downing of the team’s website. “That was a special moment for me, but I tried not to make that the focal point of what was going on. We were in the heat of the game and we needed to get the win.”

The Washington Redskins traded with the then St. Louis Rams for the second overall pick in the 2012 draft. They used it to draft Griffin III, who had tons of success with the Baylor Bears in college.

A strong performance in his rookie year led to speculations that he'll be one of the best dual-threat quarterbacks in the future. But that did not happen as one play changed the fortunes of his career.

In the 2012 NFC Wild Card round against the Seattle Seahawks, Griffin III injured his right knee and was never the same again.

His poor play in the succeeding years led to his benching and eventual release in 2016. The Cleveland Browns took their chances with him, but he got hurt in his first game with the team and became a free agent again the next off-season.
