Baltimore Ravens quarterback Robert Griffin III has been unable to practice in recent weeks since suffering a fracture in his throwing hand. Fortunately, it appears the Ravens have an idea of his potential return.

According to ESPN's Jamison Hensley, head coach John Harbaugh is optimistic about Griffin's status for the 2019 NFL season opener versus the Miami Dolphins.

Robert Griffin III is expected to be recovered from hairline fracture in right thumb by Sept. 8 regular season opener, per John Harbaugh. “We anticipate [RG3 returning] the first week of the season, if all goes well,” Harbaugh said. Rookie Trace McSorley has been running 2nd team

Although the timing of the injury means Griffin will likely not be able to get any work in the preseason, it is encouraging to see that Baltimore is expecting him to be back by the regular season. The Ravens can take solace in the fact that they will have their surefire backup healthy and available just in case.

The team officially ushered in the Lamar Jackson era by parting ways with quarterback Joe Flacco this offseason. The Ravens also went ahead and secured the depth behind him by signing Griffin to a two-year, $4.5 million extension.

With Jackson expected to get little work in the preseason and Griffin's absence due to injury, this will open things up for backup quarterbacks Trace McSorley and Joe Callahan to get some ample opportunities moving forward. It is safe to assume that McSorley could very well see the bulk of the snaps in the remaining exhibition games.
