Utah Jazz star Donovan Mitchell sent out a fiery reaction to a statement made by Real Salt Lake owner Dell Loy Hansen following the postponement of Wednesday night's scheduled game at Rio Tinto Stadium.

As part of an appearance on a local show called “Radio From Hell,” Hansen noted that he was “profoundly disappointed” in his team's decision to sit out for Wednesday's game. RSL wasn't the only professional sports team to sit out on Wednesday, though. The movement actually began in the NBA that night, when the Milwaukee Bucks became the first team to strike in an effort to raise awareness for the shooting of Jacob Blake.

“It’s a moment of sadness,” Hansen said of his team's decision to sit out, via The Salt Lake Tribune. “It’s like someone stabbed you and then you’re trying to figure out a way to pull the knife out and move forward. That’s what it feels like. The disrespect was profound to me personally.”

Real Salt Lake and LAFC made their decision about an hour before kickoff on Wednesday night. The teams were looking to support the movement that was spreading throughout professional sports. In fact, five of the six scheduled MLS games for Wednesday were not played.

After seeing Hansen's remarks, Mitchell suggested a solution for his dilemma:

During his radio appearance, Hansen was also emphatic about how much preparation he and his staff have done to get Rio Tinto Stadium in operating condition during the coronavirus pandemic. Wednesday night's game would have been the first time since March that RSL would have spectators, albeit in smaller numbers. Clearly, Hansen wasn't happy with Wednesday's happenings:

“Obviously the importance of bringing community together during COVID was not respected,” Hansen said.

In what appears to be a direct response to Wednesday's boycott, Hansen says he'll be looking to make a few changes:

“We will not be inviting fans back to the stadium in the future, so tomorrow … I start cutting 40 to 50 jobs again,” Hansen said. “We would not go through the risk of inviting people back to have that kind of an outcome.”

“It’s taken a lot of wind out of my sails, what effort I want to put into recruiting players and building a great team,” Hansen added. “It just seems that’s not a very good path to take.”

Mitchell wasn't the only professional athlete to fire back at Hansen's comments. RSL legend Nick Rimando noted on Twitter that he was “disgusted” by what Hansen said:

Toronto FC forward Jozy Altidore also chimed in, noting that he and his group are prepared to purchase the team:

At this point, it's not clear if RSL will travel to Portland for their matchup against the Timbers on Saturday.
