The Boston Red Sox’s starting rotation has dealt with a multitude of injuries throughout the first half of the season, and the unit will now be without another hurler for at least the coming week.

Ahead of their road series finale against the Seattle Mariners, the Red Sox announced that they placed Nathan Eovaldi on the 15-day injured list, retroactive to June 9. The veteran right-handed pitcher is currently dealing with low back inflammation, and as a result, the team called up Kutter Crawford from Triple-A Worcester to take his spot on the active roster.

Eovaldi last featured for Boston in its 1-0 road win over the Los Angeles Angels on June 8, where he logged 5.0 innings pitched and did not allow a single earned run. There was notable concern for the one-time All-Star throughout the game, as he threw a mere one 96 mph-plus pitch. Even with the dip in velocity on his fastball, he still managed to record 14 total swings and misses on the day.

Eovaldi noted after the contest that he felt hip tightness when he woke up on Tuesday morning. The Red Sox later decided to allow Eovaldi to fly back to Boston early in order to get him checked out by team doctors.

While there was initial optimism that he would be available to make his scheduled start against the Oakland Athletics on Tuesday, he will now be sidelined for this week.

As Chris Sale (stress fracture in rib cage) and James Paxton (Tommy John surgery recovery) have not appeared in a single game this season due to their respective injuries, Eovaldi has been among the pitchers who have risen to the occasion for the Red Sox as of late. He currently leads all Boston starters in strikeouts (72) and innings pitched (68.1) so far in the campaign.

For now, Boston will look to pick up the series win against the Mariners on Sunday.
