The Boston Red Sox just made a big splash in free agency, agreeing to a six-year, $140 million deal with shortstop Trevor Story, according to Bob Nightengale of USA TODAY Sports.

There are some unique terms to the contract:

The Red Sox making this big play for Story comes shortly after Carlos Correa surprised the MLB world by going to the Minnesota Twins on a short-term deal. This move has to sting especially bad for New York Yankees fans, who were hoping to see the team make a move for one of the top shortstops on the market.

Instead, it's the Red Sox making the shortstop splash and not New York. Story is no Correa, but he's a decent consolation prize for Boston.

The 29-year-old is coming off a relatively o-s0 season with the Colorado Rockies in which he slashed .251/.329/.471. He socked 24 home runs and knocked in 75 runs. While those numbers are just okay, his 2021 season came on the heels of three consecutive strong seasons in Denver. He made All-Star Games in 2018 and 2019, and he was good in the COVID-shortened 2020 campaign as well.

The Red Sox are fresh off a trip to the ALCS in 2021. They lost to the Houston Astros in six games after beating the Yankees in the AL Wild Card Game and the Tampa Bay Rays in the ALDS.

By adding Story to the fold, Boston has another big bat in the lineup to help them take the next step. It's going to be a battle in the AL East with all the talent there.
