The Washington Redskins are officially 0-1 after losing to the rival Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday afternoon. Making matters worse, all veteran running back Adrian Peterson could do was watch his teammates fall to the Eagles from the sidelines as he was tabbed as an inactive healthy scratch by Redskins head coach Jay Gruden.

According to Gruden, Peterson was scratched because he doesn’t take part in the kicking game or special teams formations while fellow running back Wendell Smallwood does.

“I don’t think I’ve kind of grasped it yet,” Peterson said, via Kareem Copeland of The Washington Post. “It’s my first time ever being inactive, a healthy scratch. It was tough, of course. I’m a super competitior. I’ve been thinking about playing these guys since last year since the season ended and they broke us off. So it was tough not being out there, so I just have to make the best out of the situation, and in that way, I just become a coach on the sideline. Helping the guys out as much as I could, and cheering for the guys as well.”

The Redskins notably took an early 17-0 in the first half, though the struggling NFC East ultimately came up short against the Eagles by the score of 32-27 as Philadelphia outscored Washington 25-7 in the second half. It is also worth noting that starting Redskins running back Derrius Guice recorded a mere 18 yards on 10 carries and three catches for 20 more yards in the Week 1 loss to the Eagles. Chris Thompson served as Guice's backup and posted three rushing attempts for 10 yards alongside seven receptions for another 68 yards.
